ATLAS.ti 8

ATLAS.ti Qualitative  Data Analysis Software

ATLAS.ti 8 is highly intuitive and easier to learn and use than any other QDA program–including older versions of ATLAS.ti.

What is ATLAS.ti?

ATLAS.ti is a powerful workbench for the qualitative analysis of large bodies of textual, graphical, audio and video data. Sophisticated tools help you to arrange, reassemble, and manage your material in creative, yet systematic ways. ATLAS.ti keeps you focused on the material itself. Whether your field is anthropology, economics, criminology, or medicine: ATLAS.ti will meet your qualitative analysis needs!

How can ATLAS.ti help my analysis?

Get to know your material in tremendous depth. ATLAS.ti offers a set of tools and features that are powerful and flexible enough to get to the bottom of even the most complex data materials. Code systematically and develop a system of meaning that unlocks your specific research subject. Explore your data with the Network Editor, the Text Search Tool, Word Clouds, Word Frequency tables, and through the various Query Tool options. These tools will help you discover the intricate hidden “texture” of your data, its interwoven meanings.

Your central workspace in ATLAS.ti serves as a container for your project’s data. Access to all basic project components such as your documents, highlighted/coded data segments, codes, memos, hyperlinks, groups, or networks is fast and comfortable.

Coding can be done by simply dragging codes onto the selected piece of data. Object Managers, the Project Explorer, and the Co-occurrence Explorer let you browse and navigate through your project data. Link your findings in a semantically meaningful way and visualize your findings and interpretations in a digital mind map as you go.

What unique features does ATLAS.ti offer?

The interactive margin area is a unique work space in ATLAS.ti, not surpassed by any other program on the market. It permits a uniquely intuitive way of interacting with your data, digitally transferring the traditional paper-and-pen analogy in the digital world. Moreover, you undo and redo up to 100 steps of your work, so you can sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in your data.

The quotation level is also radically unique to ATLAS.ti. If offers an analytic level below coding and better supports inductive, interpretive research approaches like grounded theory, hermeneutic, discourse analysis, sociology of knowledge, or phenomenology than any other software.

The same can also be said about the ATLAS.ti network/visualization function. It offers the most integrated way of working with your data, it is a tool for visualization as well as for analysis, for data organization as well as conceptual level analytic work and data presentation.

Because of the way ATLAS.ti manages data under the hood, it allows for handling much larger projects than other products: ATLAS.ti can handle projects that contain thousands of documents and/or tens of thousands of coded data segments.

To support multi-method multi-user projects across space and time (longitudinal studies), project data export using XML is available. With XML, the proprietary nature of most software systems can be mitigated. This is indeed a mandatory need in scientific settings. ATLAS.ti’s dedicated XML schema influenced the development of the QuDEX language for the purpose of archiving qualitative data.

You can use ATLAS.ti to analyse data in virtually any language or character set. ATLAS.ti 8 and ATLAS.ti Mac are fully Unicode-compatible, so no matter where in the world you are, you can use ATLAS.ti to analyse your data.

Does ATLAS.ti permit team work?

ATLAS.ti supports collaborative work in several highly effective ways and you can calculate intercoder agreement directly within the software. Dedicated tools as well as some general principles of the software make collaborations a breeze across both ATLAS.ti 8 Windows and ATLAS.ti 8 Mac.

What kind of data can be analysed with ATLAS.ti?

Text documents, such as articles and transcriptions (in all major formats, including .txt, .doc., .docx, .odt, .pdf, etc.) - Graphic files - Audio files (in all major formats, including .wav, .mp3, .wma, etc.)  - Video files (in all major formats, including .avi, .mp4, .wmv, etc.) - Evernote data - Twitter data - Geographic data (e.g., Google Maps) - Data from any Reference Manager for a literature review (exported to Endnote XML) - Survey data (e.g., open-ended answers, demographic data, etc.)

What are the different versions of ATLAS.ti?

ATLAS.ti is available for Windows and Mac computers as well as iPad and Android tablets. There is also a fully web-based version: ATLAS.ti Cloud. Just login into your account online, and you can continue to analyse your data from wherever you are.

* Minimum configuration means just that:  You will be able to install and run the program.  You will be able to perform all basic functions and work with text and multimedia files.  But please do not expect to work with larger or a great number of multimedia files or to run auxilliary applications in parallel.

** Bigger is better! The more available resources (especially RAM and processor power) your system has, the more comfortably and smoothly will you be able to work with ATLAS.ti.  For work with multimedia material, embedded content, or for running auxilliary applications we strongly recommend PC systems of a solid mid to upper-level capacity.
